Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck’s AI Filmmaking Startup InterPositive:

Netflix has announced the acquisition of InterPositive, a production technology startup launched in 2022 by actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck.

The deal reflects Netflix’s broader strategy to integrate generative AI tools into film and television production. The streaming giant has already experimented with AI-driven special effects in some of its original projects and has previously indicated to investors that it intends to take advantage of ongoing advancements in artificial intelligence.

Affleck said he began exploring how AI could reshape filmmaking in 2022. His goal, he explained, was to ensure that technological progress would support rather than replace human creativity in storytelling. According to him, preserving the role of human judgment and protecting artistic expression were key motivations behind founding InterPositive.

Unlike some AI initiatives that focus on creating digital actors or synthetic performances, InterPositive’s technology is designed to assist production teams during post-production. Its AI model analyzes footage from a project to help editors resolve issues such as continuity errors, lighting inconsistencies, background adjustments, and environmental enhancements.

Affleck explained that extensive research and development went into building the company’s first model, which is trained to understand visual logic and maintain editorial consistency while respecting established cinematic principles. The system can also help manage real-world production challenges like missing shots, background replacements, or incorrect lighting conditions.

The tools were designed with built-in safeguards to protect creative intent, ensuring that filmmakers remain in control of artistic decisions while using AI to streamline technical work.

As part of the acquisition, Affleck will join Netflix as a senior adviser. The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction.
